We are listed in many of the worlds top guidebooks including Lonely Planet, Frommers, Fodors, Rough Guide and Lets Go.

We do a daily expedition. Monday, Wednesday and Friday to the summit of Mauna Kea for Sunset and Stargazing. Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday to the spectacular molten Lava flows and Saturday to see our famous Valleys and Waterfalls.

No reservation is needed for tent or dormitory space. Reservations are advised for other rooms specially in February and July/August. We do not insist on reservations as many of our guests simply arrive unannounced and take their chances (As I do when I travel).

The Big Island seems to serve two types of guests really well.
The Adventurers who come to do our exciting expeditions, stay two or three days and leave.
The longer staying guests make Arnotts their headquarters and rent a car or take the Bus to Kona or even hitchhike, all have wonderful adventures and come back with many stories.

Our tours go to the three main attractions on the Island but there are hundreds of other wonderful places to see and things to do.

As of November 4th, 2002 there is a very active Lava flow which we hike to 3 times a week and sometimes do special expeditions if particularly interesting or spectacular flows occur.

We also go 3 times weekly to the Summit of Mauna Kea Mountain 13,796ft (4200meters) for hiking, sunset and stargazing. If you are a guest of our lodge this trip is $50, compare to over $150+ charged to guests at the high end Hotels on the west side of Hawaii Island.

On Saturdays we go to Valleys and Waterfalls on our beautiful Hamakua Coast north of Hilo.

Saturday and Wednesday is also the day of the Famous Hilo Farmers Market with amazing locally grown flowers, vegetables and fruits.

Hilo has a modern side with a great Borders Book Store and coffee shop, Island Naturals health food store, Walmart, a food court and a thoroughly modern mall. In downtown Hilo is "Bears" Euro style coffee shop.

There are small neighborhood stores within a few minutes walk or bike ride of the Lodge as well as a GREAT homemade ice-cream store.

If you have time please look at the pictures on our website for some idea of the sights of the Big Island.

We look forward to serving you soon.

Aloha......Doug Arnott
