Our plane awaits us at Island Hoppers airport H/Q with Mauna Kea mountain in the background. Our pilot greets us on a pristine Hilo Morning. Takeoff rollout, I am in the pilots seat as the window opens. Arnotts (circled) is close to everything, Downtown Hilo in the distance under the wingtip is just three miles (5km) or 20 minutes by bicycle. Arnotts (circled) is very close to Onekahakaha Swimming area at the bottom of this picture. The breakwater finished in the 1930's snakes out from the port protecting the harbor. A broad view, Arnotts(circled), nearby coral beach and turtle viewing (arrow), Richardsons beach park (circled) in the distance.
Our uncrowded area with large wetlands nature reserve for migratory birds and great turtle and whale (in season ) watching. The view looking west over the Lodge at Mauna Kea Mountain 13,796ft (4200m). Closeup of Onekahakaha manmade swimming area 5 minutes from the Lodge. This is flat and handicap accessable all the way from the Lodge. Nearby facility being converted to a demonstration Aquaculture project. Arnotts is at the top of the picture. Overview of our area (Lodge circled) Turn left at the two story condo (arrow) on the corner and follow Arnott's signs.
Nearby Lake, "Seaside" Seafood Restaurant and Aquaculture facility. Nearby swimming and snorkeling (top). Detail of Richardsons Black Sand Beach Park. Pristine sea and lots of turtles and fish. Many nearby houses have ponds caused by collapsed lava tubes. The commercial port of Hilo and 1930's breakwater (seawall) that makes it useable. On the horizon belching sulphur gas is Puu O'o. The active volcanic vent of Kilauea Volcano only 22 miles away.
Island Hoppers Charter & Flight School Headquarters conveniently close to the active runway. We approach the runway after a great photo mission.
